Bill Signed to Make Washington Coal Free

Seattle, WA – Statement from Dan Kohler, Environment Washington:

“I am proud to have joined Washington Governor Chris Gregoire in Centralia today as she signed Senate Bill 5769, legislation that will phase out coal-fired energy production at TransAlta, the state’s only coal-fired power plant. The coal plant, Washington’s largest stationary source of global warming, mercury and smog-causing pollution, will begin to shut down in 2020, with a full transition by 2025. Additionally, the legislation will require the plant to immediately reduce the facility’s emissions of nitrogen oxides, and invest in energy efficiency projects and clean energy technology development to promote clean power across the state.”
