Environment Washington sent out thousands of postcards and asked people to write letters in support of the expansion effort. The organization then went door to door and collected the postcards and letters, which will be mailed to Salazar.

Kristina Dumas, Environment Washington field associate, said the priorities for the country's national parks will be announced Nov. 15.

"We have a window of opportunity to protect one of the nation's last rain forests," said Dumas. "If we don't take action now, we may never have this chance again."
When it was established in 1899, Mount Rainier National Park became the fifth national park in the country.
